The IRC establishes a baseline maximum dryer exhaust duct length of 35 feet. Each 90-degree elbow requires a 5-foot reduction in this maximum allowable length. Therefore, a system with two 90-degree elbows reduces the maximum straight run to 25 feet, making the other length options incorrect.

Even minor protrusions into the airstream, such as screws or rivets, will catch highly combustible lint particles as they pass through the duct. Over time, this causes rapid lint accumulation and blockages, significantly increasing the risk of a dryer fire. The other options describe issues that are either scientifically inaccurate for this context or secondary to the primary fire hazard.

Building codes explicitly prohibit the use of screens on dryer exhaust terminations because they quickly trap lint and create dangerous blockages. The correct professional action is to refuse the screen and use a code-compliant damper to prevent pest entry. Installing screens, even with waivers or larger mesh, violates safety standards.

Dryer booster fans must be accessible for routine cleaning and maintenance because they are prone to lint accumulation. Furthermore, codes require an alarm or indicator to warn the homeowner if the booster fan fails, preventing the dryer from operating against a massive, unassisted restriction. The other options violate accessibility and installation standards.

Gas dryers vent both moisture/lint and the products of combustion through the same exhaust duct. If the duct is blocked or disconnected, deadly carbon monoxide (CO) can spill back into the living space, creating a severe poisoning hazard. Electric dryers do not produce combustion gases, making this a unique risk for gas appliances.

Corrugated foil transition ducts are easily damaged, highly susceptible to crushing, and nearly impossible to clean thoroughly once heavily impacted with lint. The industry best practice is to discard and replace them with a new, code-compliant UL 2158A listed product. Attempting to clean them often results in tears or trapped lint that remains a fire hazard.

Codes explicitly prohibit the use of screws, rivets, or any fasteners that penetrate the interior of the duct, as they will catch lint. Joints must be secured and sealed externally using UL-listed foil tape or mastic. Standard cloth duct tape degrades rapidly under the heat of a dryer exhaust and is not approved for this application.

When warm, moisture-laden exhaust air hits cold duct walls in an unconditioned space like an attic, condensation occurs rapidly. Insulating the duct keeps the interior walls warm, allowing the moisture to remain in vapor form until it exits the termination. Drilling holes or using PVC are severe code violations, and secondary lint traps do not extract moisture.

A functioning backdraft damper is critical for sealing the home envelope from the outside environment when the dryer is not in use. A stuck-open damper provides easy access for birds and rodents, allows cold/hot drafts into the home, and wastes energy. It does not cause a vacuum effect or overwork the blower motor; in fact, an open damper provides less airflow resistance.

In engineered common exhaust systems for multiple dryers, a continuous-operation or pressure-regulated exhaust fan is required to maintain negative pressure in the shaft. Backdraft dampers on each individual branch are mandatory to prevent exhaust from one dryer blowing into another resident’s unit. The other options involve severe code violations, such as using combustible materials or PVC.

The IRC clearly limits the length of transition ducts to a maximum of 8 feet. Furthermore, this transition duct must be a single length and listed to the UL 2158A standard. Lengths exceeding 8 feet increase the risk of crushing, kinking, and lint accumulation behind the appliance.

A reverse-blowing skipper ball is specifically designed with rear-facing jets. These jets act like a rocket, propelling the tool deep into the ductwork while simultaneously blowing the dislodged lint backward toward the technician and the vacuum collection point. Forward-blowing nozzles would push the clog deeper into the system toward the dryer.

Dryer exhaust contains gallons of water vapor per load, along with highly combustible lint. Terminating into a crawlspace traps this moisture, rapidly causing structural wood rot and toxic mold, while the lint creates a massive fire hazard. Codes strictly require exhausting directly to the outdoors to avoid these exact issues.

When airflow is restricted, the dryer cannot expel the heat it generates. This causes the internal temperature of the dryer cabinet to skyrocket. Over time, the constant overheating degrades the high-limit thermostat until it fails in the ‘closed’ position, allowing the heating element to ignite the lint trapped inside the dryer chassis. Friction and drum speed are not the causes of dryer fires.
