Delayed ignition is commonly caused by gas pooling before it reaches the ignition source, frequently due to improperly placed logs or ember material blocking burner ports or the path to the pilot. Low gas pressure typically causes failure to light, not a sudden burst. Venting issues usually cause ghosting or pilot dropout, and thermopiles cannot generate “excessive” voltage to cause this issue.

Standard code and most manufacturer instructions require a minimum of 12 inches of clearance between a horizontal direct-vent termination cap and an unventilated soffit to prevent heat damage and ensure proper exhaust dispersal. Clearances less than 12 inches are typically prohibited, while 24 or 36 inches are required for ventilated soffits, not unventilated ones.

Because LP gas has a specific gravity greater than 1.0, it is heavier than air and will sink and pool in low-lying areas like basements, posing a massive explosive risk if a leak occurs. LP gas actually burns hotter than NG, does not revert to a liquid in typical basement temperatures, and uses the same venting categories as NG appliances.

The appliance regulator ensures that the fluctuating incoming supply pressure is reduced and maintained at a steady manifold pressure (e.g., 3.5″ w.c. for NG) for consistent and safe burner operation. Shutting off gas is the job of safety limits or the main operator head, electrical step-down is done by a transformer, and air mixing occurs at the air shutter, not the regulator.

A white, hazy film on the glass during the initial burn period is a normal occurrence caused by the curing of paints, sealants, and initial condensation of combustion byproducts. It should be cleaned with a non-abrasive, approved cleaner. Carbon buildup (from a closed shutter) presents as black soot, not a white haze, and it does not indicate glass failure or rain infiltration.

Natural draft systems require time for the exhaust gases to heat the flue and establish a thermal draft. Industry standards dictate waiting 5 to 10 minutes of operation before testing for spillage at the draft hood.
